Down the line was conceived by Mike Tomson in August 1976. Unable to find anything to read in a CNA one afternoon, he decided to give the South African surfing community "some new found juice".
He saw rapid growth in adrenalin sports that surfers related to and although surfing lifestyle was to be the magazines focus, reporting on Rock Music, Skateboarding, Moto-X, Windsurfing, Hang-gliding, Paddle-Surfing and Hobie sailing featured in the 10 issues of Down The Line in 1976 and 1977.
Mike Tomson co-editored the magazine with Patrick Lee while art direction was given by Leighton Alcock and photographic contributions were edited by Rob Pettit.
